  2. THE LAWS OF THE KINGDOM                         Lecture 10.

  4.                          THE LAW OF LOVE
  5. INTRODUCTION.
  6.  
  7. No passage of the NEW TESTAMENT contains such a concentrated
  8. expression of the Christian ethic of personal relation as this
  9. does.
  10.  
  11. IT IS CHRISTIANITY IN ACTION.
  12.  
  13. Most people know Jesus speaks about LOVE, and very often condemn
  14. the professing Christian for falling so far short of its demands.
  15.  
  16. Paul said in Romans 13:10, "Love is the fulfilling of the law."
  17.  
  18. True with the old decalogue - Matt. 22:37-40, "Jesus said unto
  19. him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and
  20. with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and
  21. great commandment, and the second is like unto it, Thou shalt
  22. love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all
  23. the law and the prophets."

  25. True with the New Commandments of Jesus, except instead of being
  26. summarised with two there is just one.
  27.  
  28. John 13:34, "A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one
  29. another; as I have loved you, that ye love one another."

  31. THE BLESSING OF PERFECT LOVE.

  33. Note Romans 13:8-10 -
  34.  
  35. Also Galatians 5:13,14 -
  36.  
  37. 1 Timothy 1:5- "Now the end of the commandment is charity out of
  38. a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned."
  39.  
  40. ALL THE LAW IS SUMMED UP IN ONE WORD, "LOVE"
  41.  
  42. It is remarkable to note that under the commandment we are
  43. commanded to love God and our neighbour, but under the new
  44. commandment we are only commanded to love one another. In loving
  45. one another, we are loving God.
  46.  
  47. SIN IS A TRANSGRESSION OF THE LAW OF LOVE.
  48.  
  49. Transgressed by thought, actions and heart. Jesus said here in
  50. the 5th commandment, Love your enemies.
  51.  
  52. We are also instructed how to manifest our love to them -
  53.  
  54. 1    Those who curse us, those who wish us evil and pray against
  55.      us. The Lord says we are to love them and bless them.
  56.  
  57. 2    Those who hate and detest us, sleight us. Show our love by
  58.      doing good.
  59.  
  60. 3    Those who despitefully use us. Those who threaten us, treat
  61.      us with insult, we are to love and manifest our love by
  62.      praying for them.
  63.  
  64. 4    Those who persecute us, speak against us, and act against
  65.      us - love them and pray for them. In days gone by it was the
  66.      sword. In these days it is by the tongue. James 3:5-8.

  68. Before you point the finger, look at those pointing back. Let us
  69. take all others' wrong-doing in the right spirit.
  70.  
  71. Romans 12:19-21, "Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves."
  72.  
  73. The Natural man can't, but the spiritual man can, being born
  74. again.
  75.  
  76. To live this law out we must be very clear as to what Jesus means
  77. by loving our enemies.
  78.  
  79. He wants us to be partakers of the divine nature - 2 Peter 1:4
  80. You added to brotherly kindness charity.
  81.  
  82. Christ loved his enemies - "Father, forgive."
  83.  
  84. It is the sinful life that hinders the full manifestation of the
  85. life of Christ. THE CROSS DEALS WITH THAT.
  86.  
  87. These laws of the Kingdom are impossible without Pentecost. Ezek.
  88. 36:37.

  90. How does the Holy Spirit work?
  91.  
  92. 1.   Reveals and removes sinful life by applying the finished
  93.      work of Christ.
  94.  
  95. 2.   Cleanses by the light. Then reveals more light. The that
  96.      reveals is the light that heals. Given Christ's
  97.      righteousness, sheds the love of Christ in our hearts,
  98.      enables us to love our enemies, and to be children of God
  99.      not only in name but in Character - LOVE.

  101. THE MEANING OF IT.
  102.  
  103. The Greek language is rich in synonyms (words with shades of
  104. meaning), which the English language does not possess. The Greeks
  105. have four words for LOVE:
  106.  
  107. 1.   FAMILY LOVE. The noun "storge", verb "storgein". The love of
  108.      a parent for a child and a child for a parent - Family
  109.      affection.
  110.  
  111. 2.   EROTIC LOVE. - noun "eros", verb "eran". This is the love of
  112.      a man for a woman, there is always passion in them.
  113.      Described as the "terrible longing". In these words there is
  114.      nothing essentially bad; they simply describe the passion of
  115.      human love; but as time went on they began to be tinged with
  116.      the idea of lust rather than love, and they never occur in
  117.      the NEW TESTAMENT.

  119. 3.   REAL LOVE. - noun "philia", verb "philein". This is the
  120.      warmest and best Greek word for love. It describes real
  121.      love, real affection. The verb can mean to fondle, to kiss.
  122.      It is the word of warm tender affection, the highest kind of
  123.      love.
  124.  
  125. 4.   UNCONQUERABLE, INVINCIBLE LOVE. - noun
  126.      "Agape", verb "Agapao". The real meaning is unconquerable,
  127.      benevolence, invincible goodwill. It means no matter what
  128.      that person does to us, no matter how he treats us, no
  129.      matter if he insults us, or injures us, or grieves us, we
  130.      will never allow any bitterness against him to invade our
  131.      hearts, but we will regard him with that unconquerable
  132.      benevolence and good-will which will seek nothing but his
  133.      highest good. From this word, agape, certain things emerge.

  137. LOVE IS IMPARTIAL: Note: Matt. 5:43
  138. So we can call our study-

  140. THE LAW OF IMPARTIALITY
  141.  
  142. Read Matt. 5:43-48
  143. The Laws of the Kingdom are for one purpose:- To reveal ourselves
  144. to ourselves or to see ourselves as God sees us.
  145. The Law of Love or Impartiality is a Barometer to measure the
  146. degree of maturity we have attained.
  147. Note Matt. 5:48 "BE YE THEREFORE PERFECT."

  155. 1. STATING THE LAW. v43-44
  156.  
  157. "Ye have heard it said"
  158. At the time of initial writing "Thou shalt love thy neighbour and
  159. hate your enemy."
  160. Neighbours and enemies were clearly defined.
  161. But man has narrowed down who his neighbours are; And calling his
  162. enemies those who should be friends!
  163.  
  164. Notice: The progression of response Jesus recommends to :-
  165.  
  166. Matt. 5:44
  167.       1. LOVE       = Enemies
  168.       2. BLESS      = Them that curse
  169.       3. DO GOOD    = Them that hate
  170.       4. PRAY       = That despitefully use and persecute you.

  172. SO LOVE YOUR ENEMIES.
  173.  
  174. You Will Notice:
  175. 1. We will determine to love a person because of a desire to
  176.     please God.
  177. 2. Soon our emotions are changed and we find ourselves truly
  178.    loving that person.
  179. 3. It is impossible to love our enemy with any but God's love.
  180.    AGAPE LOVE

  182. Illustration Of Being Despitefully Used.
  183. A brother had a job canvassing (door to door.) He was the newest
  184. man on the job, so he was sent into the house with savage dogs.
  185. Some dogs viciously attacked him; But he didn't hate his fellow
  186. workers because of this:-
  187. "God, you sure You gave me this job?" Yes
  188. Well I'll love them. Three (3) months latter two of them were
  189. saved. He had to earn the right to witness to them.
  190.  
  191. Joy When The Enemy Is Punished.
  192. Also sometimes when you tittle tat of others you get joy out of
  193. seeing them thrashed.
  194. Look what the scripture says:-
  195. Proverbs 24:17- "Rejoice not when thy enemy falleth, and let not
  196.                  your heart be glad when he stumbleth." Check
  197.                  King David's attitude in 2 Sam. 1:11-16.

  199. A friend and I have a argument. (and under my breath I say.)
  200. "The Lord will get you, that's what he'll do."
  201. Then the man goes out and trips over the front door and breaks
  202. his legs.
  203. ATTITUDE:
  204. "Well he got what he deserved, too bad."
  205. If this is your attitude, are you fulfilling Jesus's commandment?
  206. LOVE HIM - Feel for him for you know what he is going to suffer.

  208. 2. REASON FOR THE LAW. v45
  209. Notice; "THAT".
  210. In order that, So that, "Ye may be (Sons) Children."
  211. What is God saying?
  212. In other words we are to mature into the same attitude as that of
  213. the Father.
  214. A mark of Maturity is Impartiality.
  215. Children have:-
  216.                Pet friends
  217.                Operate in small circles
  218.                Exclude all others
  219.                Often use ridicule to keep outsiders out.
  220. GOD WANTS US TO GROW UP.
  221. Become Impartial- Love the ugly duckling as well as the good
  222. looking one.
  223. We tend to shun the Ugly Duckling. YUCK! YUCK!

  226. "Rain upon the just and the unjust."
  227. Jones cattle property and Morley's cattle property.
  228. God knows Jones a sinner and Morley's a saint. So he sends rain
  229. to Morley and excludes Jones. "NO"
  230. God is IMPARTIAL.
  231. He wants us to mature. He wants us to be like HIM.
  232. TEST:-
  233.      Next time that there is a argument. Stick up for the family
  234. even if you know they are wrong, and demolish right. "NO"
  235. Love your family. Remember God loves both alike but he treats
  236. them differently.

  238. 3. COMPARISON  (you and the publican.) v46-47
  239. If you only love them that love you, you are no better than the
  240. ungodly and the publican.

  242. 4. CONCLUDING COMMAND. v48
  243. "Be ye therefore perfect."
  244. Perfect = Teteios. (Tell-e-os)
  245. To come to a full end. To Mature.
  246. Gods aim is that the seed planted in us comes to full ahead.
  247. (Maturity)
  248. How we treat our enemies is a mark of Immaturity or Maturity.
  249. All Fathers desire there children to grow up. Sometimes we say
  250. "(Oh grow up won't you)" when the children are acting childish.
  251.  
  252. If I'm wrongly offended, am I permitted to maintain an offended
  253. attitude?
