THE LAWS OF THE KINGDOM Lecture 10.
THE LAW OF LOVE
INTRODUCTION.
No passage of the NEW TESTAMENT contains such a concentrated
expression of the Christian ethic of personal relation as this
does.
IT IS CHRISTIANITY IN ACTION.
Most people know Jesus speaks about LOVE, and very often condemn
the professing Christian for falling so far short of its demands.
Paul said in Romans 13:10, "Love is the fulfilling of the law."
True with the old decalogue - Matt. 22:37-40, "Jesus said unto
him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and
with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and
great commandment, and the second is like unto it, Thou shalt
love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all
the law and the prophets."
True with the New Commandments of Jesus, except instead of being
summarised with two there is just one.
John 13:34, "A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one
another; as I have loved you, that ye love one another."
THE BLESSING OF PERFECT LOVE.
Note Romans 13:8-10 -
Also Galatians 5:13,14 -
1 Timothy 1:5- "Now the end of the commandment is charity out of
a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned."
ALL THE LAW IS SUMMED UP IN ONE WORD, "LOVE"
It is remarkable to note that under the commandment we are
commanded to love God and our neighbour, but under the new
commandment we are only commanded to love one another. In loving
one another, we are loving God.
SIN IS A TRANSGRESSION OF THE LAW OF LOVE.
Transgressed by thought, actions and heart. Jesus said here in
the 5th commandment, Love your enemies.
We are also instructed how to manifest our love to them -
1 Those who curse us, those who wish us evil and pray against
us. The Lord says we are to love them and bless them.
2 Those who hate and detest us, sleight us. Show our love by
doing good.
3 Those who despitefully use us. Those who threaten us, treat
us with insult, we are to love and manifest our love by
praying for them.
4 Those who persecute us, speak against us, and act against
us - love them and pray for them. In days gone by it was the
sword. In these days it is by the tongue. James 3:5-8.
Before you point the finger, look at those pointing back. Let us
take all others' wrong-doing in the right spirit.
Romans 12:19-21, "Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves."
The Natural man can't, but the spiritual man can, being born
again.
To live this law out we must be very clear as to what Jesus means
by loving our enemies.
He wants us to be partakers of the divine nature - 2 Peter 1:4
You added to brotherly kindness charity.
Christ loved his enemies - "Father, forgive."
It is the sinful life that hinders the full manifestation of the
life of Christ. THE CROSS DEALS WITH THAT.
These laws of the Kingdom are impossible without Pentecost. Ezek.
36:37.
How does the Holy Spirit work?
1. Reveals and removes sinful life by applying the finished
work of Christ.
2. Cleanses by the light. Then reveals more light. The that
reveals is the light that heals. Given Christ's
righteousness, sheds the love of Christ in our hearts,
enables us to love our enemies, and to be children of God
not only in name but in Character - LOVE.
THE MEANING OF IT.
The Greek language is rich in synonyms (words with shades of
meaning), which the English language does not possess. The Greeks
have four words for LOVE:
1. FAMILY LOVE. The noun "storge", verb "storgein". The love of
a parent for a child and a child for a parent - Family
affection.
2. EROTIC LOVE. - noun "eros", verb "eran". This is the love of
a man for a woman, there is always passion in them.
Described as the "terrible longing". In these words there is
nothing essentially bad; they simply describe the passion of
human love; but as time went on they began to be tinged with
the idea of lust rather than love, and they never occur in
the NEW TESTAMENT.
3. REAL LOVE. - noun "philia", verb "philein". This is the
warmest and best Greek word for love. It describes real
love, real affection. The verb can mean to fondle, to kiss.
It is the word of warm tender affection, the highest kind of
love.
4. UNCONQUERABLE, INVINCIBLE LOVE. - noun
"Agape", verb "Agapao". The real meaning is unconquerable,
benevolence, invincible goodwill. It means no matter what
that person does to us, no matter how he treats us, no
matter if he insults us, or injures us, or grieves us, we
will never allow any bitterness against him to invade our
hearts, but we will regard him with that unconquerable
benevolence and good-will which will seek nothing but his
highest good. From this word, agape, certain things emerge.
Read 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 (LIVING BIBLE).
LOVE IS IMPARTIAL: Note: Matt. 5:43
So we can call our study-
THE LAW OF IMPARTIALITY
Read Matt. 5:43-48
The Laws of the Kingdom are for one purpose:- To reveal ourselves
to ourselves or to see ourselves as God sees us.
The Law of Love or Impartiality is a Barometer to measure the
degree of maturity we have attained.
Note Matt. 5:48 "BE YE THEREFORE PERFECT."
Check the out line which Jesus uses to bring this lesson out-
1. Stating the Law. v43-44
2. Reason for law. v45
3. Comparison (you and publican). v46-47
4. Concluding command (comparison to our ideal). v48
1. STATING THE LAW. v43-44
"Ye have heard it said"
At the time of initial writing "Thou shalt love thy neighbour and
hate your enemy."
Neighbours and enemies were clearly defined.
But man has narrowed down who his neighbours are; And calling his
enemies those who should be friends!
Notice: The progression of response Jesus recommends to :-
Matt. 5:44
1. LOVE = Enemies
2. BLESS = Them that curse
3. DO GOOD = Them that hate
4. PRAY = That despitefully use and persecute you.
SO LOVE YOUR ENEMIES.
You Will Notice:
1. We will determine to love a person because of a desire to
please God.
2. Soon our emotions are changed and we find ourselves truly
loving that person.
3. It is impossible to love our enemy with any but God's love.
AGAPE LOVE
Illustration Of Being Despitefully Used.
A brother had a job canvassing (door to door.) He was the newest
man on the job, so he was sent into the house with savage dogs.
Some dogs viciously attacked him; But he didn't hate his fellow
workers because of this:-
"God, you sure You gave me this job?" Yes
Well I'll love them. Three (3) months latter two of them were
saved. He had to earn the right to witness to them.
Joy When The Enemy Is Punished.
Also sometimes when you tittle tat of others you get joy out of
seeing them thrashed.
Look what the scripture says:-
Proverbs 24:17- "Rejoice not when thy enemy falleth, and let not
your heart be glad when he stumbleth." Check
King David's attitude in 2 Sam. 1:11-16.
Illustration:-
A friend and I have a argument. (and under my breath I say.)
"The Lord will get you, that's what he'll do."
Then the man goes out and trips over the front door and breaks
his legs.
ATTITUDE:
"Well he got what he deserved, too bad."
If this is your attitude, are you fulfilling Jesus's commandment?
LOVE HIM - Feel for him for you know what he is going to suffer.
2. REASON FOR THE LAW. v45
Notice; "THAT".
In order that, So that, "Ye may be (Sons) Children."
What is God saying?
In other words we are to mature into the same attitude as that of
the Father.
A mark of Maturity is Impartiality.
Children have:-
Pet friends
Operate in small circles
Exclude all others
Often use ridicule to keep outsiders out.
GOD WANTS US TO GROW UP.
Become Impartial- Love the ugly duckling as well as the good
looking one.
We tend to shun the Ugly Duckling. YUCK! YUCK!
Note:-
Illustration of section. v45.b
"Rain upon the just and the unjust."
Jones cattle property and Morley's cattle property.
God knows Jones a sinner and Morley's a saint. So he sends rain
to Morley and excludes Jones. "NO"
God is IMPARTIAL.
He wants us to mature. He wants us to be like HIM.
TEST:-
Next time that there is a argument. Stick up for the family
even if you know they are wrong, and demolish right. "NO"
Love your family. Remember God loves both alike but he treats
them differently.
3. COMPARISON (you and the publican.) v46-47
If you only love them that love you, you are no better than the
ungodly and the publican.
4. CONCLUDING COMMAND. v48
"Be ye therefore perfect."
Perfect = Teteios. (Tell-e-os)
To come to a full end. To Mature.
Gods aim is that the seed planted in us comes to full ahead.
(Maturity)
How we treat our enemies is a mark of Immaturity or Maturity.
All Fathers desire there children to grow up. Sometimes we say
"(Oh grow up won't you)" when the children are acting childish.
If I'm wrongly offended, am I permitted to maintain an offended
attitude?
